[J-Rock] Band-Maid

One of the bigger breakouts from Japan. Probably manufactured, but surprisingly still ok. They started off as rather typical pop/rock, then developed a harder edge. They finally wrote their own composition on their last CD, and their upcoming single appears to continue this. They're surprisingly pretty decent musicians, esp. their guitarist and drummer.

Select PVs:

Their best song, in my not so humble opinion.

Their break-out song.

Apparently, this is their first original composition.

I need to play their latest CD more, but I'm slowly preferring it over "New Beginning" (more subtle and even). Their single 愛と情熱のマタドール I like a lot (despite being 2/3rds pop) and "Forward" from their debut MCD I like a lot too.

I guess this will be something I post in a lot as I co-run a BAND-MAID unofficial fan club.

A bit of news.

BAND-MADE released cover art for both versions of the upcoming single, YOLO (I know, unfortunate name. But how were they supposed to know). The single comes out 16 November.

The cover gives an interesting message... think they're going in a harder/more-aggressive direction? This band has had a strange aesthetic since day #1, so nothing they do should really shock me anymore.

They fall in the no-man's land between metal and J-Rock over there (actively touring with bands from both scenes).

I'm all for a more metallic direction. The few samples I've heard were decent.

On a side note, "alone" is the first song written, composed and arranged completely by the band, but some members have had their hands in the mix with a couple of other songs off the Brand New MAID album.

Kobato Miku (rhythm guitar/vocals) and Saiki (vocals) wrote the lyrics for track 5, "YURAGU"

Kobato Miku wrote the lyrics for track 6, "FREEDOM"

They are also about to start their first international tour with dates in Mexico, Europe and Asia. (They have previously played in Seattle, Washington and London, England)

"Freedom" indeed. It would be a good step to see them take over everything. I guess if they were assembled at short notice, they wouldn't have had any material anyway.

Any idea if any members played in any previous bands and/or were music school graduates?

You might be interested in a "book" I am writing on the evolution of the bands stage costuming. Also I have been working on a pictorial history of their live shows. These are not the easiest projects but I am making progress.

When I am done I will let interested parties know where to download them.

Hirose Akane (drummer) and MISA (bass) are both graduates from the Tokyo School of Music Shibuya

Kobato Miku was in an idol outfit called Lil Cumin (cumin like the spice, get your mind out of the gutter Tongue) they released 2 singles and a mini-album.

MISA played in several bands before but we have never been able to find out which ones. They probably were bands that never released anything.

Hirose Akane and Tono Kanami (led guitar) also play in a soft rock type band called もちとちーず (Mochi to Chizu or Rice Cakes and Cheese).

Hirose Akane also plays piano and trombone

MISA also plays piano

Tono Kanami also plays piano and she is also an endorsed player of Addictone guitars and has a signature model.

Can't really think of anything else off the top of my head

Thanks for the info. I always assume damn near everyone over there started piano at age 4 Laugh

A lot of these girl-bands have members from music schools - hence why they can play pretty good. I think Yuki (Lovendor) was at that music school Akane and Misa went to, but earlier.

I wonder at what level they have to play at in order to graduate? I wouldn't be shocked of they had to play Dream Theater or Malmsteen on the final exam or something lol

I am not sure of the level they need to be at to graduate, I do know that they go back and visit at least once a year.

If you want to know anything else I will do my best.
