General Western Non-Metal Thread
As much as classic rock bands are celebrated for their widespread appeal and influence for future generations to come, not all of them necessarily click with people. It's so easy to shit on nu metal and the like, lamenting on rock's demise by that point.

Anyway, here are my least favorite classic rock bands, and my selections are a bit based more on how they would influence future bands, rather than just judging the quality of their own albums. This is all just my personal opinion, and if you disagree, that's fine.

First up, it's Van Halen. Don't get me wrong — the self-titled debut album and the next two or three albums all have their moments, but as the years went on, the band got pretty dumb and bogged them down with inconsistent songs. Even the first album, which I hold as being their most complete work, still suffers from a few flaws, despite how great the songs "Atomic Punk", "On Fire", and "Runnin' with the Devil" are. As far as how they've influenced bands throughout the 1980s and onwards, I must admit that when it pertained to Eddie Van Halen's playing style, a lot of bands kept up with the flow. I'm just not a fan of the habit of introducing stupid filler songs, and even the bands clearly influenced by Van Halen were doing the exact same thing.

Second in line is AC/DC. I'll admit that they had something going for themselves early on with Bon Scott, but really, their music was always simplistic and just not interesting enough for me to warrant ownership of anything with AC/DC's logo slapped on it. To this day, I still have yet to own an AC/DC album. After a while, their music became pure redundancy. The only way someone would know which song they're playing is by listening to the chorus. For what it's worth, at least Krokus and Nazareth did a little more than just hang on the root. I've heard a few bands influenced by them, even at one point owning an Airbourne album, but it was a one-time deal for me.

Finally, Guns N' Roses takes the cake for me. The absolute pile of disappointment, if you ask me! They were considered the one band that supposedly shut down the whole spandex scene, when they themselves weren't any better than the likes of Poison, Bon Jovi, Ratt, Cinderella, or Warrant. In fact, I have even more respect for what Mötley Crüe pulled off in the beginning. Their sound was like no other on Too Fast for Love, released in late 1981, and the NWOBHM was just getting around to collapsing a few years later. Back to Guns N' Roses, though — I just never cared for their music, and Appetite for Destruction is just a run-of-the-mill hard rock album with the occasional blues and pop elements. Axl Rose has always annoyed me with his whiny, dehydrated mosquito voice. Likewise, Slash was never all that good of a guitarist. His playing is just generic, and once you look past the smokescreen of the massively hyped songs "Welcome to the Jungle" or "Paradise City", there isn't anything really much more to their music.

Again, just my personal opinion on the above bands. There are far worse bands out there, but these three within the "classic rock" umbrella epitomize the very things that I don't enjoy about it.
I'm with you on AC/DC except I'd probably even be harsher on them. Screw you I like Van Halen though. Tongue And G&R aren't bad.

I didn't really bother getting into old rock bands I never liked. So I can't really write huge paragraphs about it, but off the top of my head I don't like The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed or Heart at all. The former basically just sounds like edgy lyrics over mediocre music to me, and the other one is a snoozefest. Oh well.
Occasionally, I write music reviews.
Everything. Tongue

But yeah, AC/DC is trailer park rock.

Once I discovered metal, I couldn't dump rock fast enough.

I always hated Lou Reed, so one can only imagine how abysmally bad Lulu by Metallica is. Big Grin

Heart was never all that good, although I always liked "Barracuda".
This thread isn't showing up in the "last post" thing for this forum (not sure what's causing that). It does show up on the sidebar though. (wrong forum, wasn't paying attention Tongue)

Barracuda has a nifty riff, not sure I like the actual song though.

But Painkiller, what about AC/DC with Axl Rose on vocals. Tongue (To be honest Rose sounded significantly better than Johnson and his worn out voice, which was never as good as Bon Scott's.) Honestly I don't mind a couple AC/DC songs, but overall I'm not a big fan at all.

I don't think Fleetwood Mac was all that good either. They had a couple decent songs, but their stuff for the most part kinda bores me. Same with Chicago, whose only truly awesome song was 25 or 6 to 4. They had a couple okay ballads, but their music was for the most part too soft and too samey. Not my least favorite bands, but kinda underwhelming to me.
That's an amalgamation of all things terrible. Tongue
I like a few songs from each of the bands mentioned so far, but not enough to ever buy anything of theirs.

I would add to that list some others that have just never done anything for me (apart from a few songs):
  • Aerosmith
  • Eagles
  • Dire Straits
I would go with Neil Young, Bob Dylan and the Eagles. But I don't hate them or anything, their music just leaves me cold, especially Dylan.
Well mainstream rock bands never did a lot for me, watching four or five guys noodling around on guitars mired in, I don't know "mid-tempo grumpiness" for want of a better phase, leaves me cold. Hell, I'd rather listen to 'Pop Punk' (God, I hate that term), as at least it's lively. And most US rock bands just made me think of 'guys with big hair and girls in bikinis rolling around on cars'.  But I guess from a British point of view, I'd probably go for Oasis or U2, since they were so bloody ubiquitous for a long time over here. Apart from 'Wonderwall' or 'Don't Look Back in Anger' in the former's case and 'With or Without You'/'Pride'/'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' for the latter, which I'll admit to liking. But they were around soooo long. Dire Straits never did anything for me either, though, apart from 'Money for Nothing'. And you can only make one good joke stretch so far...

Did always rather like Queen though. Brian May's guitar heroics and Freddie Mercury's, err, "arresting" performances kinda lifted them out of the ordinary for me, even in their poppier phases.
